About Albany

Albany Texas image
The town of Albany was developed as the county seat of Shackelford County in 1874.

Located along the famed Texas-Central Railroad line and the Dodge City cattle trail, the town adopted the slogan of “Home of the Hereford,” as area ranchers were instrumental in introducing and popularizing the Hereford cattle breed.

The town was founded on culture and long-standing traditions, and it still shines bright with home-grown attractions — such as The Fort Griffin Fandangle, an outdoor musical that has been performed every summer for 70 years. Written and performed by Albany locals, the show tells the story of the history of the founding of Fort Griffin, which gave rise to the community of Albany.

In addition to The Fandangle, Albany keeps the adventurous spirit of the Old West and frontier days alive year-round, with many of the town’s iconic landmarks and attractions are listed on the National Register of Historic Places — including the limestone Courthouse, the Aztec Theater, Old Jail Art Center, and many more.
